Gustavo Murrieta
Gus Murrieta is a visual artist and editorial designer with a degree in Industrial Design from Universidad Iberoamericana (Ibero). Born in Xalapa, he began his artistic path at a young age through the study of clarinet, poetry, recitation, music, and painting.
Murrieta’s artistic practice explores the cultural hybridity of Veracruz, focusing on enduring spiritual rituals born from the region’s syncretism, the migration of diverse ethnic groups that shape community identities, and the impact of colonial, industrial, and social processes on local traditions and natural environments.
Rooted in personal spirituality and reverence for the environment, Murrieta creates immersive, shamanic-inspired experiences and social practices that engage directly with places and their inhabitants. His work preserves elements of his spiritual, familial, and cultural heritage tied to Catholicism, which deeply permeates life in Veracruz —the place where he was born, raised, and developed as an artist. Through media such as digital graphics, painting, object art, music, and performance, he approaches life as something sacred.
His work has been selected for the Veracruz Biennial (2018, 2022) and the Pennsylvania Biennial of Graphic Arts (2020), and has been exhibited at venues including the Franz Mayer Museum in Mexico City, Centro Recreativo Xalapeño in Xalapa, Museo Betlehemita in Veracruz, Museo Regional de Cholula in Puebla, and Espacios Transdisciplinario Matamoros 404 in Oaxaca, among others.
