Alfonso Barrera

Alfonso Barrera is an artist, editor, and musician currently living in Oaxaca City. He began his artistic training in drawing and painting at Academia de San Carlos in Mexico City.

He was a recipient of the Fund for Artistic and Cultural Entrepreneurship of the State of Oaxaca in 2012, 2013, and 2015. In 2012, together with artist Mirel Fraga, he co-founded Polvoh Press Oaxaca, an independent publishing project that has released numerous titles and participated in major national and international fairs including Printed Matter Los Angeles Art Book Fair, ZⓈONAMACO, Material Art Fair, Paper Works CDMX, ARLIS/NA (The Art Libraries Society of North America), Festival Rayón, Spread Zine Fest (Netherlands), Lugares Derepente, and the Feria Internacional del Libro Oaxaca.

His pictorial and graphic work has been featured in solo exhibitions at Instituto de Artes Gráficas de Oaxaca (IAGO), Biblioteca Andrés Henestrosa, Casa de la Cultura Oaxaqueña, and Galería NN in Oaxaca City. Internationally, his work has been exhibited at Hecho a Mano Gallery (Santa Fe, New Mexico), Fresno Art Museum (California), and Makii Masaru Fine Art (Tokyo, Japan).

Barrera has participated in several artist residencies, including Centro de las Artes de San Agustín Etla (Oaxaca, 2022); Hecho Gallery (Santa Fe, 2021); La Ceiba Gráfica (2014); Contemporary-Contemporáneo (Fresno, 2009); and Poco a Poco (Oaxaca, 2023).

His work has also been published and exhibited by the French collective Le Dernier Cri (Marseille, France) and is part of the Toledo/INBAL collection.
